Diapers with a Difference

Kijani creates a diaper that is as unique as your little one, and we strive to meet the highest standards of quality and ethical production.

One of our core values is empowerment – unemployment among women in Uganda is 58%! Kijani creates jobs that pay well above market rate in a good work environment with fair labor practices.

Another value is accessibility – we partner with organizations to make cloth diapers affordable and accessible for Ugandan families. Lack of access to diapers can lead to poor household hygiene and poor health outcomes for babies and young children.

Our Story

Kijani was started by Valerie Muigai in 2014 shortly after she moved to Uganda with her husband and young children. She had made cloth nappies for her son Nathan and brought extra fabric with her in case she needed more as he grew. She received so many comments on his nappies and inquiries about where they could be purchased. Valerie started making nappies for friends as baby gifts, and their friends started placing orders.

With a background in international development, Valerie recognized that one of the most effective ways to lift a family out of poverty is to provide the mother with a steady, predictable income. She saw not just a market opportunity for cloth nappies but an opportunity to empower women by creating jobs.

Since 2014, Kijani has opened the first cloth nappy retail store in Uganda, has sold more than 50,000 nappies, and has nappies available in several countries around the world.
